Abstract

In the sphere of the researches carried out by the Architecture Department of “Roma Tre” University, in collaboration with the MiBAC, the Special Superintendence at Archaeological Heritage, and the PPC Architectural Council of the Province of Rome, an in-depth historical and critical study has been produced, in order to identify the values and the peculiar meanings concerning an area in the south-western suburb of Rome to be exploited within a system of material and immaterial attractions offered to the cultured enjoyment of the quality tourism. The critical study, executed by the methodology of the propaedeutics at the restoration, was oriented towards the supplying of information managed on digital platforms by data storage systems. Therefore, the use of graphical languages has been favoured to create unpublished cartographic elaborations that effectively express all the details necessary to plan a restoration for the development of this location. The valorization scheme that we have drawn up at this stage concerns the coastal area in the observed territory. The history of this site, stratified as a rich archaeological and historical heritage, is characterized by the moulding action of river Tevere, not only to the geo-morphological order but also towards the society, the culture and the economy of its inhabitans. At the moment, many of these presences of materials are ignored or misunderstood and a large part of their cultural and historical sense risk the disappearance. The archaeological ruins remain in a condition of precarious survival and need to be exploited inside an appropriate system of usable routes that recognize peculiarities and meanings of the territory. Before programming the development of this site, we firstly recognized the evolutive stages of the area, highlighting the connections between the morphology, the cultural events and the types of settling. The synthesis of the data we picked up is included in Historical and Archaeological remains’ Charter. Beginning from this established collection, we observed the structural components of the location, considering them in the background of all the directions coming from several levels of planning. At a later stage, identifying the valuable units and examining the current methods of their use, we drafted Local valorization’s Plan. The latter consists in defining the perimeter of the surfaces to enhance through an appropriate fruition of the territory, achieved by the conception of a range of fluvial, road, railway, cycle and pedestrian infrastructures which follow and recuperate, when possible, routes with historical value in order to read the environmental, natural and anthropic context in the best way. Of all the areas to be exploited, the Ostia Harbor structure shows the most interesting characters, from the point of view of the historical importance, the archaeological findings, the relations with river Tevere and the polarity of existing and expected tourist flow. In the archaeological areas of Ostia and Portus we can identify some significant themes, useful to understand the evolutive processes of the living and building modes in the Classical Ancient times. Yonder developing some thematic routes, we singled out the suitable artifacts getting the sense of mentioned topics; the didactic vocation of these relics dictates their restoration and, in some case, it has already been planned in prospect of the highest readable way for the architectural nature and anthropological values of this monument
