Abstract

Nowadays, the entrance in the labour market is accompanied by a sense of incertitude. Nonetheless, it is a crucial moment in the existence of young people and remains the organisational principle of biographical projects. The fundamental hypothesis presented in the volume is that the transition to work should be considered as a “permanent” condition that individuals have to tackle in this specific phase of modernity, rather than as a pathology produced by flexibility, or a more or less prolonged passage towards adult age. This implies a radical change of the traditional perspective of analysis of the passage from formal education to the labour market, and requires the assumption of a processual paradigm underlining how each transition occurs through a series of events, in which expectations, limits and opportunities give way to dynamic and interdependent choices, ever-changing and open to unexpected outcome. The adoption of a processual approach implies that occupability is determined by what happens along the pathway, and not only by contextual variables. The consequences of such approach are absolutely relevant for those who are in charge of rethinking effective and appropriate interventions in the field of education, training and labour policies.
