We present hereafter an overview of the current knowledge on the fossil vertebrate faunas of the Rome area. We start with a brief history of the discoveries of fossil vertebrates of the area, followed by an introduction on the Plio-Pleistocene biochronologic framework used by Italian palaeontologists studying continental organisms. We eventually describe the succession of faunal assemblages. The few Villafranchian remains are followed by the many faunas belonging to the Galerian and by the even more numerous faunas of the Aurelian. A list of the main LFAs (Local Faunal Assemblages) of the Rome area and their composition, follows in the Appendix.

Abstract
We present hereafter an overview of the current knowledge on the fossil vertebrate faunas of the Rome area. We start with a brief history of the discoveries of fossil vertebrates of the area, followed by an introduction on the Plio-Pleistocene biochronologic framework used by Italian palaeontologists studying continental organisms. We eventually describe the succession of faunal assemblages. The few Villafranchian remains are followed by the many faunas belonging to the Galerian and by the even more numerous faunas of the Aurelian. A list of the main LFAs (Local Faunal Assemblages) of the Rome area and their composition, follows in the Appendix.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
