The Italian debate on preserving the authenticity of our historical architecture started more than a century ago and is still current today. The questions raised over time concern both the material and the significance authenticity. This paper will provide the different cultural positions aiming to analyze the historical debate making comparisons on how the meaning of the term authenticity has changed also in relation with the evolution of contemporary art. The paper will address some specific issues: traditional building technologies, architectural language, and the knowledge tools useful for preserving the authenticity of the significance of architectural heritage. This theoretical approach will be explained by presenting some methodological examples and at last, it will be examined how the restoration activity, the re-use of the architectural heritage and the use of traditional materials are extremely important to ensure sustainable development and to guarantee a trans-generational transfer of knowledge.
Il dibattito italiano in merito alla conservazione dell’autenticità della nostra architettura storica è iniziato più di un secolo fa ed è tutt’ora attuale. Le questioni emerse nel corso del tempo hanno riguardato i diversi aspetti della disciplina del restauro architettonico. Questo contributo esamina le diverse posizioni culturali allo scopo di analizzare il dibattito culturale osservando come il significato del termine autenticità sia cambiato anche in relazione all’evoluzione delle espressioni artistiche più contemporanee. Il documento affronta alcuni temi specifici: le tecnologie tradizionali di costruzione, il linguaggio architettonico, e gli strumenti di conoscenza utili per preservare l'autenticità del significato del patrimonio architettonico. Questo approccio teorico viene esplicitato attraverso alcuni esempi metodologici giungendo ad illustrare come l'attività di restauro, il riutilizzo del patrimonio architettonico e l'uso di materiali tradizionali siano estremamente importanti per garantire uno sviluppo sostenibile ed un corretto trasferimento della conoscenza alle generazioni future.
