The essay focuses on the syntactic features of medieval vernacular translations from Latin. Considering most recent translation-related studies and the specific properties of medieval translation, this paper suggests a model to understand syntactic variation and the different strategies employed by translators, even in a single text. Two types of relevant phenomena are discussed: the first ones concern discursive operations; the second ones depend on the typological difference between source language and target language. The distinction allows to recognize that interference and linguistic contact are not the only features to take in account. The analysis of a set of “typical” Latin structures and of their vernacular counterparts shows that the language of volgarizzamenti is the outcome of a complex interaction between the possibilities offered by the linguistic system, the influence of source language and the specific discursive goals followed by translators.
