Facing the destruction of whole urban centers caused by the earthquake that affected the Central Appennine on August the 24th 2016 and in the following months, the debate on the reconstruction foresees as always opposite positions: to rebuild in the same place or elsewhere? The question is: to leave the sign of the disaster for future memory by taking the occasion of the traumatic event to propose new urban forms adapted to the social conditions changes and the new ways of living, or to deal with the losses by trying to return to the normality of the usual places, assuming the principle of where it was as it was? This last assertion is endorsed by everybody, or almost, even though also authoritative voices express perplexity in consideration of the entity of the damages caused by the earthquake, of the geological instability the earthquake-affected areas, of the historical built insecurity both to the urban scale and to the architectural one, of the already ongoing depopulation of those mountain regions and of the actual occurred "deportation" of the inhabitants without a perspective of return in brief times. The aim of this contribution is to retrace, with no presumption of completeness, the recent history of the reconstructions after the earthquakes and the war events to offer a contribution to the debate and to gather how much of positive has been done in the past and to avoid repeating errors already made.
