Abstract: The aspects of the time which this article tackles are the timetable of the single monk and those of the community, the hiatus between the mechanic and cosmic time and the ways of living, perceiving, organizing them. Starting from the case-study of the Cistercensian monastery of Dominus Tecum in Prà d’Mill, Bagnolo Piemonte, I try to shed a light on the difference between the chronological dimensions inside and outside the monastic walls, which are in a continuous and dialectic tension: we can identify them with the “holy” and the “secular” time, whose symbols are the bell of the monastery and the watches of monks.
