In this paper a full-wave numerical approach for the modal analysis of infinite periodic microstrip lines printed on a grounded dielectric slab is presented. This technique, based on the method of moments (MoM) in the spatial domain applied to a Mixed Potential Integral Equation (MPIE) within the unit-cell, enables a systematic investigation of bound modes, surface-leaky modes, and space-leaky modes. As is well known the knowledge of the dispersion properties permits a rapid determination of the number of radiating beams and of their pointing angles; the proposed approach thus represents an effective tool for the design of 1D LWAs with an arbitrary planar metallization within the unit cell.
