In this exploratory study we tried to verify to which extent Italian and Brazilian students who have attended a course of Intercomprehension (IC) between Romance languages, mainly focused on vocabulary and morphosyntax, are able to assess the adequacy of different realizations of the speech act of canceling last minute in some of the target languages. Informants (24 Italians and 25 Brazilians) were administered a judgement test of pragmatic adequacy, and their responses were compared to those of native speakers. Although data have been only partially analyzed, the first results mostly show that IC learners’ judgements differ from those of native speakers. This suggests that they did not develop pragmatic knowledge of the target languages through IC instruction without a specific focus on pragmatics.
