The article investigates a field of the history of patronage in modern age that has been until now entirely neglected: the committment of the Society of Jesus, after the recostitution in 1814, in promoting sacred Art. Accordingly, the text presents a case-study, bringing to light a great number of artistic commissions provided to Pietro Gagliardi, one of the most prominent ecclesiastical painter in nineteenth century Rome, by the Jesuits. Thanks to archival and field researches, the prolific activity of this painter for this Order is fully investigated and reveals several unpublished works of arts scattered in many parts of the Catholic Word: in Rome (Gesù, St. Ignatius Church, St. Francis Xavier’s Oratory, beatification and canonization paintings in the Vatican Museum), in Ireland (Dublin, St. Francis Xavier’s Church, Gardiner Street), in the United States (San Francisco, California, Church of St. Ignatius), in Chile (Santiago, Iglesia de San Ignacio), in Malta (St. Julians, Jesuits College).

Abstract
Julians, Jesuits College).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
