In the present paper, the techno-economic performance of a Diabatic Compressed Air Storage System (DCAES) with above-ground artificial storage is investigated. The influence on efficiency, capital and operating costs of key design quantities is analyzed in detail and widely discussed. Finally, the most promising D-CAES design solutions are compared with BES based storage systems by using the Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) method. Results show that the adoption of D-CAES can lead to a better economic performance in respect to mature and emerging BES technologies.

Abstract

In the present paper, the techno-economic performance of a Diabatic Compressed Air Storage System (DCAES) with above-ground artificial storage is investigated. The influence on efficiency, capital and operating costs of key design quantities is analyzed in detail and widely discussed. Finally, the most promising D-CAES design solutions are compared with BES based storage systems by using the Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) method. Results show that the adoption of D-CAES can lead to a better economic performance in respect to mature and emerging BES technologies.
