Falsi e archeologia

According to some recent bibliographical contributions on the subject, the search for forgery in artistic production is an obsession of modern times, and the intense circulation of copies from classical antiquity to the present day, is proof of this. But this is a mystification of historical data, which can have the effect of attenuating the negative judgment of the phenomenon, and weakening the resolve of the research on a practice that has always been perceived as fraudulent, even if with different moral and criminal consequences over time. The impulse to create fake works of antiquity is reborn with each epoch and, still today, it accompanies to a considerable extent the parallel criminal trafficking of the finds of clandestine excavations. Thanks to a number of cases emerging from the investigative activity of the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, it has been possible to highlight interesting aspects of the most recent production of false archaeological finds.

La ricerca del falso nella produzione artistica sarebbe un’ossessione dei tempi moderni, secondo alcuni recenti contributi bibliografici sul tema e l’intensa circolazione di copie fin dall’antichità classica ne sarebbe la prova. Ma questa è una mistificazione del dato storico, che può avere l’effetto di attenuare il giudizio negativo sul fenomeno e depotenziare il senso della ricerca su una pratica che è sempre stata avvertita come una frode, anche se con diverse conseguenze morali e penali nel tempo. La spinta a creare false opere antiche si riattualizza di epoca in epoca e ancora oggi affianca, con numeri importanti, la parallela attività criminosa del traffico di reperti scavati clandestinamente. Grazie ad alcuni casi emersi dall’attività investigativa del Comando Carabinieri per la Tutela del Patrimonio Culturale è possibile evidenziare interessanti aspetti della più recente produzione di falsi reperti archeologici.
