Abstract

The following documents the progress of a project recently funded by the Università Roma Tre in the context of the University’s Extraordinary Research Development Plan-Project: CALL4IDEAS, that the Department of Architecture is conducting, by means of Antonio Pugliano direction, in order to produce a Dynamic Atlas ICT: a geographic information system (GIS) on Rome useful for documentation, the enhancement of the ‘historic urban landscape’ and the characterization of construction, of archaeological and geological substrates, contributing to the fruition and safety of the city by laying the cognitive premises useful for the prevention of hydrogeological and seismic risk. This paper presents a mapping of the failures that have been caused to the city by historical earthquakes: a preliminary tool for assessing the seismic vulnerability of entire urban sectors. Representing earthquakes as a driving force for scientific evolution and refinement of construction techniques, special attention is paid to roofing structures: their study allows to recognize, enhancing them, the structural character and the incidence in terms of performance of formal and constructive peculiarities with the aim of using these techniques, although optimized, in restoration interventions with philological matrix.
