This paper deals with the Italian translations of João Guimarães Rosa’s (1908‐1967) work. Rosa’s work is characterised by the mix of languages, registers, neologisms, and intertextual references, as well as a literary complexity which could lead to different interpretation. Hence, by using Eco’s term, the Italian translators are forced to “negotiate” between the meaning of the text and the author’s style, in order to preserve the “essence” of the text. However, some losses are inevitable when translating such a complex work. Here are provided some noteworthy examples of these losses by applying Bruno Osimo’s framework for the “quality” of translations.
