Abstract

In Rome, at the beginning of the 9th century, the list of donations granted by Pope Leo III (Liber Pontificalis 98, cc. 69-81) refers to 117 places of worship, which draw a map of the basilicas, tituli, diakonia, monasteries and oratoria situated in the city (intra- and extramural). From the 6th to the 8th century, the study of the archaeological evidences regarding the liturgical enclosures of the churches of Rome, concerns a small number of examples, scattered and various in form, size and materials. This contribution aims to provide a framework for our archaeological knowledge of liturgical space, reporting on the proposed dating of certain types of barriers and fences. Moreover, we shall wonder when the liturgical furnishings of the churches in Rome adapted to new needs, through the rereading of certain privileged sources and considering the specific stationary organization of the Roman liturgy.
