La pedagogia impegnata di bell hooks. Per una visione inedita dell’inclusione come processo trasformativo del pensiero e delle pratiche

One of the salient aspects that characterizes in a peculiar way the precursors of inclusion is certainly the ability to inhabit — dialectically but without schism — the thinking and the acting, the theory and the praxis. The term «militancy» is often used — and today it is often recalled to designate a way of being in the pedagogy and to thinking about it — as an expression not so much of belonging to a certain organization or a certain movement, but as a way of being, of posing and being in things, of participating in the concrete dynamics of the social fabric, of living in contexts with authenticity, getting one’s hands dirty. Well, this description perfectly fits to the figure, thought, work and actions of bell hooks, who passed away in November 2021 at the age of 69. bell hooks was many things: writer, teacher, academic, essayist, activist, popularizer, cultural critic and more. She was able to inhabit all these multiple social identities, interweaving them along a red thread characterized by a vigilant, attentive, never predictable, indeed, always new and disorienting look, aimed at unveiling, taking an intersectional perspective, the mechanisms of domination-subordination generated by the sexist, racist and classist logic that pervades our social structure. The authors, aware of the impossibility of even imagining to essentialise the scientific and socio-cultural contribution of bell hooks, try here to give back at least a brief biographical, existential and intellectual profile, with the hope of respecting those who already know and appreciate this unique figure and with the hope of stimulating those who have not yet had the opportunity to «meet» her to treasure her extraordinary legacy.

Uno degli aspetti salienti che caratterizza in modo peculiare i precursori e le precorritrici dell’inclusione è certamente la capacità di abitare, dialetticamente ma senza schisi, il pensare e l’agire, la teoria e la prassi. Si usa spesso — e oggi è sovente richiamato per designare un modo di essere nella e di pensare alla pedagogia — il termine «militanza», quale espressione non tanto di appartenenza a una certa organizzazione o a un determinato movimento, quanto come modo di essere, di porsi e di stare nelle cose, di partecipare alle dinamiche concrete del tessuto sociale, di abitare i contesti con autenticità, sporcandosi le mani. Ebbene, questa descrizione calza alla perfezione alla figura, al pensiero, all’opera e alle azioni di bell hooks, scomparsa nel novembre del 2021 all’età di 69 anni. bell hooks è stata molte cose: scrittrice, insegnante, accademica, saggista, attivista, divulgatrice, critica culturale e quant’altro. Ha saputo abitare tutte queste identità sociali plurime intrecciandole lungo un filo rosso caratterizzato da uno sguardo vigile, attento, mai scontato, anzi, sempre inedito e spiazzante, indirizzato a disvelare, assumendo una prospettiva intersezionale, i meccanismi di dominio-subalternità generati dalle logiche sessiste, razziste e classiste di cui è pervasa la nostra struttura sociale. L’autore e l’autrice, consapevoli dell’impossibilità anche solo di immaginare di poter essenzializzare il portato scientifico e socio-culturale di bell hooks, cercano qui di restituirne almeno un breve profilo biografico, esistenziale e intellettuale, con la speranza di rispettare chi già conosce e apprezza questa figura unica e con l’augurio di stimolare chi invece ancora non ha avuto modo di «incontrarla» a fare tesoro della sua straordinaria eredità.
