In this contribution, we describe how advanced cloaking metasurfaces allows expanding the functionalities of wire antennas and make them suitable candidates for future wireless systems. In particular, we show that, by loading the cloaking device with proper electronic circuits, the antenna can be made sensitive to the characteristics of the surrounding environment and modify accordingly its transmitting/receiving properties. Several applications are discussed, showing that the behavior of conventional wire antennas coated with such advanced cloaking metasurfaces can be made dependent either on the power level or the temporal waveform of the incoming signal. The unprecedented functionalities here discussed may pave the way to a further boost in the quest of smart antennas for next-generation systems.
