Augmented reality is a technology for the distribution of digitized information superimposing virtual and multimedia contents or geolocated data on real environments. After explaining the operation of augmented reality and the current methods of use, the contribution aims to evaluate how new technologies, especially those transferred from the telecommunications and robotics sectors, animate contemporary research. In this sense, in addition to some similar experiences, the contribution makes extensive reference to the experiments carried out for decades by Gramazio and Kohler Research, in collaboration with ETH of Zurich. The important Swiss firm has foreseen a limit in some of its most daring research, for example those relating to the use of bulky robotic arms, difficult to manage on building site. For this reason, Gramazio and Kohler Research recently proposed the use of augmented reality to guide the bricklaying with the aim of generating complex surfaces in three-dimensional space. The prototype consists of a dedicated portable equipment with a video camera and two laptops for processing, as well as a viewer that allows the bricklayer to know exactly where and how to lay the brick, or how much mortar is needed. Finally, the paper focuses on the case study of the Kitrus winery in Greece, for which a small building was built for the storage of grapes.

Abstract

he paper focuses on the impact of new technologies, in particular augmented reality, on the building activities.
