Roofs represent a class of crucial technical elements from the point of view of a wide range of performances that affect the behaviour of the entire building organism. The “short-sighted” race for false building innovation, that often confuses what is traditional with what is outdated, might suggest that roofing with a brick finishing layer belongs to historical architecture. in this sense, the most innovative research aims to investigate the performance of traditional roofs, whose qualitative value is known, to highlight the relationships between construction elements and performance specifications that are still little known. Referring, in particular, to discontinuous roofing with brick finishing layer, it is necessary to reconsider traditional solutions in an innovative way. With the aim of underlining how discontinuous brick roofing is a solution capable of effectively responding to a wide range of needs, the contribution compares the main performance characteristics of brick roofing with some types of roofing in other material, with reference to metallic ones. Starting from the historical-evolutionary telling of brick roofs, the paper analyses the necessary requirements that brick roofs fulfil very well, and then reports the results of the most updated and innovative research
