The transition to a more sustainable urban energy system is a prerequisite for climate mitigation and for the achievement of a global zero-emissions economy. Cities and their inhabitants represent an important potential for initiatives to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions thanks to their diversity, dimensional variety and building pattern. However, studies about energy transition have given little attention to issues of space and place, and how they can shape different energy systems and technological solutions, influencing their transformative capacity. In fact, the concept of “transition” has been predominantly concerned with socioeconomic changes of a geographic unit over time. In this context, the presentation explores potentials and limits of renewable energy communities in the urban context with the first results of a research on the interdependence between energy production and energy demand of a decentralized energy system in relation to the variation of some urban patterns in Rome.
