The transition to decentralized and sustainable urban energy systems is a milestone in mitigating the effects of climate change. Cities, both because they are energy-intensive and because of the cooperative presence of their inhabitants, play a central role in the transition to decentralized energy systems. Numerous initiatives are promoting Renewable Energy Communities, and although many have been created in Italy recently, they are mostly found in small towns. This contribution, with reference to pilot cases in Rome, explores potentials and limitations of decentralized energy systems and investigates the relationship between local morphology, spatial planning and energy transition in built-up urban fabrics paying attention to the role of proximity spaces in supporting decarbonization.

Abstract
The transition to decentralized and sustainable urban energy systems is a milestone in mitigating the effects of climate change. Cities, both because they are energy-intensive and because of the cooperative presence of their inhabitants, play a central role in the transition to decentralized energy systems. Numerous initiatives are promoting Renewable Energy Communities, and although many have been created in Italy recently, they are mostly found in small towns. This contribution, with reference to pilot cases in Rome, explores potentials and limitations of decentralized energy systems and investigates the relationship between local morphology, spatial planning and energy transition in built-up urban fabrics paying attention to the role of proximity spaces in supporting decarbonization.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
