This study investigates the high-strain rate uniaxial compressive behaviour of glued laminated bamboo (glubam) at the strain rate ranging from 400 to 1000s-1. Glubam is a engineered bamboo material with planer bi-directional bamboo fiber configurations. The samples used in the testing has 80% of bamboo strips in the longitudinal orientation while 20% in the transverse orientation. The dynamic tests were performed using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) made of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy, which has a diameter of 40mm. The tested cylindrical specimens are nominally 26mm in diameter and 15mm in height. Two different directions were studied to identify the anisotropic behaviour: longitudinal direction and transverse one. Static tests were carried out to determine the strain rate dependency characteristics in terms of the dynamic increase factor. The preliminary results provide evidence that glubam exhibits strain-rate dependency and that the longitudinal direction is more sensitive to the strain-rate effects than the transverse one.
