This paper documents some studies conducted by Roma Tre University aimed to the production of organized forms of knowledge and active preservation useful for the dissemination of traditional expressions in architectural culture. In tune with the definition of ‘ historic-urban landscape’ established by UNESCO recommendations, as well as with the conventions produced on the same subject by the European Commission (especially the Landscape Convention and the Faro Convention), thesauri on architectural culture constitute indispensable tools for the recognition and sharing of common identity traits among different populations. These thesauri, structured in the form of illustrated relational vocabularies are expressive of the 'commonplaces' of the architectural lexicon and constitute a normalized and implementable repertoire of linguistic reference. Resources of this kind can be applied to conservation activity on multiple occasions: in design syntheses, in propaedeutics to operational choices at the spatial and urban scale, and in their demonstration and communication. The wide range of specialized knowledge that connotes planned conservation can undoubtedly benefit from the production of such linguistic mediation tools. Moreover, these are also applicable in digital environment as a standard reference for sharable databases and repositories.
