In recent decades the debate in the sciences of religion has addressed the question of the interrelation between methods and disciplines. Even while continuing to give a privi- leged role to the historical perspective, the exchange with other disciplinary fields has become fundamental in the construction of a complex knowledge, capable of reading and interpreting the religious phenomenon. On the basis of this approach, the ShaRP LAB (where ShaRP stands for Sharing Religious Places) research group was set up, a transdisciplinary network bringing together historians of religions, anthropologists, architects, geographers, sociologists and art historians, interested in the spatial dynamics of religious interaction. Inspired by a holistic ap- proach, the members of ShaRP LAB adopt different angles and methods – from the emic gaze to the social framework, from the historical-critical method to that of the social sciences and digital humanities – to open new horizons in the study of (also) shared religious places. Start- ing from the Manifesto – recently published in the journal “Annals of Religious Studies” of the ISR-FBK – the ShaRP LAB group has built a research protocol that explicates and deepens the synergy of methodological approaches used in the study of religious places. The monographic session therefore aims to highlight the innovative character and potential of the protocol – as a tool capable of constructing complex knowledge in the field of the sciences of religion – by systematising six different contributions on the religious site of the Great Mosque of Rome.
