A smart cushion for the monitoring of the sitting posture symmetry is presented that is well suited to the possibilities enabled by the IoT for the Industry 4.0 paradigm. The system, developed to improve the worker’s health preservation by preventing the low-back pain that may be caused by the prolonged asymmetrical sitting, consists of a cushion equipped with four force sensors, interfaced to an Arduino Mega® board, and a Java-based computer program with a user-friendly GUI. The software checks the symmetry of the force exerted on the two sides of the seat, notifying the user when an appreciable asymmetry is detected. then the user is invited to adjust the sitting position and adopt a correct posture. Every position shift is recorded and sent to a cloud database. The developed system is calibrated on the user, and allows collecting age-, height-, width-, and gender-informed data about the sitting posture.

Abstract
