This paper presents the findings from the administration of two tests conducted as part of a national research project aimed at studying the effects of reading aloud on middle school students. The two tests used investigate socio-emotional skills within the framework of Theory of Mind. The collected data suggest that shared reading aloud can have a significant impact on the development of mentalization abilities, specifically the capacity to understand and reflect on one’s own and others’ mental states.

Abstract

This paper presents the findings from the administration of two tests conducted as part of a national research project aimed at studying the effects of reading aloud on middle school students. The two tests used investigate socio-emotional skills within the framework of Theory of Mind. The collected data suggest that shared reading aloud can have a significant impact on the development of mentalization abilities, specifically the capacity to understand and reflect on one’s own and others’ mental states.
