European urban contexts and urbanisation processes are facing an energy transition that progressively requires the integration of technical solutions within consolidated spaces and energy behaviours. Concurrently, EU policies have long privileged the economic and technical dimensions of energy, often neglecting its impact on space and people. However, these urban contexts layered with levels of complexity such as dense and historic fabrics, climate hotspots, governance inertia, require a thoughtful design that combines technological innovation, social needs and ecological balances in a general lack of space and resources. PEDFORALL, an ongoing research project, interprets Ostiense in Rome as a potential positive energy neighbourhood, embracing energy sufficiency as a key concept to tune the technological apparatuses to the socio-spatial features of the site.
