Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are third-party certified labels based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), aimed at improving transparency and comparability in environmental communication. Despite their potential, EPDs face challenges such as lack of methodological standardization, limited sectoral and geographical coverage, and issues with data quality. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of 305 academic sources to critically analyse the current state of EPD research. The review identifies key gaps and future directions, highlighting the need for harmonization, clearer rules, and enhanced consumer understanding to support sustainable product development and more informed environmental choices.

Despite their potential, EPDs face challenges such as lack of methodological standardization, limited sectoral and geographical coverage, and issues with data quality. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of 305 academic sources to critically analyse the current state of EPD research.
