The aim of this study is to identify the different push and pull factors of cross-border forced migration and internal displacement by means of a joint hurdle gravity model. Particular attention is devoted to determining the effects of climatic factors, while controlling for the economic, political and social relationship between the origin and the destination. We consider a full panel data analysis and estimate a random effects joint hurdle gravity model following the Bayesian paradigm using the Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the different push and pull factors of cross-border forced migration and internal displacement by means of a joint hurdle gravity model. Particular attention is devoted to determining the effects of climatic factors, while controlling for the economic, political and social relationship between the origin and the destination. We consider a full panel data analysis and estimate a random effects joint hurdle gravity model following the Bayesian paradigm using the Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation.
