Pliny the Elder’s zoological investigation in Books VIII-XI of the Naturalis historia integrates empirical observation with ethical and moral reflection, presenting exempla of virtue and vice through the lens of animal behavior. The author scrutinizes with discernment the creatures inhabiting the three natural domains, highlighting certain qualities that align them with humankind and, at times, render them even superior. In doing so, he exposes the moral degeneration of Roman society, corrupted by luxuria and avaritia. Transformed into both mirror and admonition for humankind – blinded by the desire for possession and consumption, and thereby betraying the cosmic order – the animals become central figures in a treatise where scientific inquiry is interwoven with a deeper moral and philosophical critique.
