Scripted mass media has received growing attention by linguists as an ideal site for sociolinguistic investigation. Linguistic variation as represented in films is unlikely to perfectly match reality due to an inevitable degree of stylization. And yet film dialogues stage social dynamics that are to be found in the real world (see Taylor 1999). The aim of this paper is to investigate how the mass media makes use of linguistic variation by analysing the representation of African American English in mainstream American films along with their Italian dubbed counterparts. The data for the study is drawn from a corpus of mainstream films produced and dubbed in recent years.
