Aids for persons with disabilities are all the products, tools, equipment and technological systems of specialized production or common trade, used by persons with disabilities to prevent, compensate, alleviate, or eliminate an impairment, disability, etc. (EN ISO 9999, 2022). In Italy, the National Health Service funds aids, following certification of a disability status, under medical prescription. For this purpose, aids are classified within an ofÏcial list, called “Nomenclatore tariffario” (DPCM 12.01.2017), which is not always updated to the latest technologies. This list can be modified using the “referability” principle. Through referability it is possible to obtain funding for an aid even if it is not included in the ofÏcial list if its function is like the function of an included one. However, the most innovative aids are also expensive and the process for referability is very long. The paper sets out the first results of a multi-year research project, leaded by Department of Architecture of the Roma Tre University, aimed at overcoming disabilities with the support of innovative technologies. With the aim of reduce costs and broaden the audience of users, the research focused on technology transfer from the field of robotics and systems based on microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators, with reference to low-cost and open-source technologies. Following an updated state of the art, the paper will describe the design and prototyping process of two aids: a wheelchair controlled by head movement via accelerometer, useful for quadriplegics, and a long white cane replacement glove, capable of warning of the presence of obstacles, via ultrasound. Critical considerations inherent in the scale-up from prototype to product will be made on both projects.

Abstract
Critical considerations inherent in the scale-up from prototype to product will be made on both projects.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
